Summer is the perfect time to create a new family reading routine!
Nightly reading habits not only build literacy skills in kids, but increase bonding time between parents and children, which improved trust levels and makes parenting easier as the children age! And it’s never too late to start. Early reading routines increase chances for long term success across all areas of life….AND it doesn’t have to be difficult books or for hours a day. You can take 15 minutes a night as you tuck kids into bed and read a story and talk about it as you go. Let’s build this vital routine this summer, to make a life long habit for you and your kids 🙂
Introducing the 60 Book Summer Contest!
How it works:
1 Pick up a copy of the tracker
*at the Learning Council Office before JUNE 27, 2025
* OR print a copy HERE
* OR take a screenshot and edit it as you read.
2. Read 60 books as a family between July 1 and August 31. Build brains, bonds and summer memories!
A.Read 2 or 3 day if you start a little late and need to catch up, or if you miss a day or 2. The goal is creating a nightly habit, but it’s okay if you’re not perfect about reading one book each night.
B. NOTE: Have older kids and want to participate? You don’t have to read 60 Nancy Drews or Captain Underpants books. Read together for 15 minutes a night, even it’s a long book and you only get one completed all summer!
3. Colour in the spine of the books on our tracker sheet for each book read. If you read Dr. Seuss’ The Sleep Book every night, that counts as a book each night. If your son loves Little Blue Truck and you read it continuously, that counts too!
4. September 1, email us a picture of the completed tracker (i-learn@lloydlearningcouncil.org) OR send us a picture via messages on our FB page (https://www.facebook.com/lloydlearningcouncilassociation/)
5. You have until September 3 to send in your pictures.
6. September 4th we will draw and contact 3 winners with family fun packages.
That’s it! It’s about starting a family reading habit. Whether you have a baby and all you’re reading is Good Night Moon, or if you have kids in elementary school and you’re reading The Hobbit together, read for 15 minutes every day together.
